Addie Has Two Mommies!!!

Recently the bug had to complete a project for school. The project...create a picture of your family out of various items you would find in your kitchen. Each member of the family, including the pets, was to be represented. The bug was very excited the morning when she took her project to school to show at Circle Time. That afternoon when I picked her up, she looked at me very puzzled.

"What's the matter bug?"

"Do I have two mommies?"

"No, you have one mommy and one daddy."

"Addie has two mommies, does that mean that she also has two daddies?"

"Well, what did Addie's family project look like."

"Addie had a mommy, a mimi, and Addie. Oh, and Addie also had her cat, Whiskers."

"Well, bug, every family is different. Some children have two mommies, some children have two daddies, some children have a mommy and daddy, and some children have no mommies and daddies, just Nana's and Pop's. Every family is different and unique. That is what makes families so special. "

"Oh, I want to have two mommies like Addie."

"Bug, that's not going to happen."

"Why can't I have two mommies like Addie."

"Because Bug, you have a mommy and a daddy. We love each other just like we love you."

"Do Addie's two mommies love each other?"

"I'm sure they do."

"Oh, can I have ice cream for dessert?"

The next day when I picked the bug up she was very excited...

"Mommy, mommy, guess what, I was playing with Addie today and I told her that we were both very lucky because she had two mommies and I have a mommy and a daddy and do you know what Addie said?"

"No, what?"

"Addie said that she has a daddy."

"She does."

"Uh, huh Addie said that she has two mommies because her daddy lives in a bottle. Isn't that silly mommy, have you ever heard such a thing? Daddies living in bottles."

Okay...now how do I explain this one. When I approached Military Man, he was speechless. I'm sure the time will come when I will have to explain why Addie's daddy lives in a bottle. But until then I figure I will let it go.

Why am I the first comment?! It's hilarious - you can't make this s**t up!

ROFLMAO! When my dd was about 4 I took over to my friend's house. She knew my friend and her partner but never understood that they were a couple. When she discovered they lived in the same house and shared a room that only had one bed (she used their restroom and the questions began) she looked very confused and asked her final question. Which woman cleaned the house and which one went to work? I barely contained my laughter but when we told her they both did she ran off to play.

I enjoyed your piece about the two Mommies. I don't envy young mums, it's all to hard.
I'm writing an article about the questions children ask and would like to quote you. But I'm sorry you stopped when you did. What I'd like to know is how does one expand on the daddy gave mummy a seed talk these days? I'd be grateful for some help.

Because of the bug's age, we try to keep things simple so she can understand, but honest. You don't want to bombard a 4 year old with too much information at one time. Especially one a precocious as the Bug. I follow the K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) approach. It has not failed me yet.
