Hurricane's and four year
olds are not a good combination. During Katrina and Ivan, The Bug and I hunkered down in the administrative offices of the psychiatric hospital where Military Man worked at that time. Ivan was not a problem, The Bug was only a few months old. Katrina, the bug was a year old, toddling around, getting into everything, and getting frustrated because there was not much to do in an administrative office. The Bug, now 4, is already getting frustrated and the the storm hasn't even hit. Thankfully, we are hunkering down at home this time. Here are the list of activities that I have come up with so far to keep her entertained...
- 7 movies rented from Blockbuster (DVD player charged in case power goes out.)
- 4 flavors of pudding for finger painting
- New crayons and coloring books
- Cookie mix to bake cookies (as long as the power does not go out)
- Games and puzzles
I am looking for input people. Anyone who has a small child will understand, you can only keep them cooped up for so long until they start going stir crazy and you as well. Any other ideas to keep a four year old entertained during a storm is greatly appreciated.

maybe you could teach her how to read and write? I do not envy you your position one little bit. Oh, and science experiments... perhaps blow up some vinegar and baking soda, or make goo with corn starch. Drawing a mural is always fun...
You may not be able to do this at this late date and may or may not have power right now. Anyway...what my kids love to do is play in rice. Sound crazy, I know. But, get a big rubbermaid tub, fill it with 10 or 15 lbs of rice and then they can play in it like a sandbox. Put a sheet under it to help make clean up a little easier. My boys love this!
Home made play dough is a good one for a while...
Just get out all the kitchen tools and let her at it. You can even color it.
"Play Dough"
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup water
Mix well until it forms a ball. Knead add food coloring if desired. If sticky add some flour and if to dry add a small amount of water.
i could always just give my boy a small soccer ball, his trucks or anything like that and he would be content for days...boys are so easy :)
Thank you all for your input. Reas the play dough was a hit and kept the bug entertained for 2 hours. The it kept Military Man entertained for another hour. Amy, I wish I had heard about the rice before the storm hit or I would have gone out to the grocery store and purchased a 15 pound bag. Rice is one thing we usually do not keep in the burned out household, it interfere's with Military Man's low carb diet.
Rice is only used for play in our house...My husband is diabetic and generally avoids rice in favor of other carbs. I don't even know if my kids know that people eat rice. LOL
My only thought was Benedryl. LOL
